AWQAF SA and Pakistan based Al Huda Centre of Islamic Banking and Economics (Al Huda CIBE) formally entered into a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) at Gallagher Estate, Sandton, Johannesburg, at the closure of the International Conference on Islamic Banking and Finance in Africa organized by AlHuda CIBE. In terms of the MoU, Awqaf South Africa and AlHuda CIBE will jointly work for the promotion of Islamic Banking, Finance and Waqf in South Africa while Al Huda CIBE will also provide a “Waqf Studies” course through its distance learning platform in addition to their other training programmes. Al Huda Centre of Islamic Banking and Economics is a leading institute focused on providing training courses and certificate programmes in various fields relevant to Islamic Finance and banking such as Takaful, Sukuk, and Islamic microfinance. Awqaf SA is a pioneer advocate and developer of the institution of Waqf in Southern Africa.

In a joint statement issued by Mohamed Zubair Mughal , CEO of Al Huda CIBE and Raaghieb Najjaar , CEO of Awqaf SA: “We are delighted at this MoU because it brings knowledge on the divine institution of Waqf to an international audience. We believe that this partnership will bear the necessary fruit in that thousands of people across the globe will now have access to authentic training materials on a subject that is gaining worldwide recognition he further said: Africa is fastest growing Market for Islamic Finance and we are very much determined to provide technical skills, Human Resources development and shariah expertise for the stake holders., for accomplish these tasks we are striving to establish a centre of excellence in South Africa.”

Spokesperson for Awqaf SA, br Zeinoul Cajee said that training and education and the development of “Awqaf Cadres” is an important facet of the Awqaf SA mission. A Waqf Studies module was initiated during 2009 under an MoU with the University of KwaZulu Natal for their Certificate in Islamic Law programme that yielded around 90 graduates.

The Al Huda CIBE – Awqaf SA partnership is a world first and it is hoped that other institutions both in South Africa and abroad will introduce the Waqf course. Emphasis is placed on this course because it has had important implications for the promotion and protection of Islamic Civilization as well as for poverty alleviation, nation building and community empowerment.
