6th International Interest-Free Banking and Takaful Forum 2026 - August 17, 2026 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

About Ethiopia

Ethiopia is an emerging but still underdeveloped market for interest-free finance, where interest-free finance principles are gradually gaining traction alongside broader financial sector reforms. The country’s banking system has recently begun to accommodate interest-free (Islamic) banking windows under the regulatory oversight of the National Bank of Ethiopia, supporting growing demand for Shariah-compliant services such as takaful (Islamic insurance) and interest-free microfinance, especially in underserved and rural communities. Fintech is also expanding rapidly, led by mobile money platforms like telebirr, which improve financial inclusion and could be adapted further for Islamic financial products. On the capital markets side, Ethiopia is in the early stages of building its securities ecosystem through the establishment of the Ethiopian Securities Exchange, creating long-term potential for Shariah-compliant instruments such as sukuk, although issuance remains limited for now. Overall, the sector is at a formative stage, with strong demographic demand and policy interest, but still requiring deeper regulatory frameworks and product innovation to fully develop Islamic finance services.
